[quote=stick;586846]Just my take on it........the whole deal about same gap on each lobe was appropriate back in the days of quality stock parts. It's seldom achievable with the junk that's available today. I never worried about it, just set the wide lobe and let 'er be. Always ran good enough for me. Never a prob with rough running.

Wide lobe, yes, never had running issues. If the electric is so good why carry the points?.....................NTSS.................. Rick

Absolutely carry a complete points setup with you if your planning a long road trip.I carry the whole setup for road side repair,ya never know. They may be a pain in the ass to setup but they are reliable.

I run my stock prestolite electronic, mechanical advance ignition, still after 32 years......I carry points in case it ever does crap out. Never needed them for MY bike, but they've helped out others over the years whose new-fangled electronics died and left them stranded hundreds of miles from nowehere.

I put points in the ones I build.

Me too....I carry a spare ignition module on long road trips. I used to carry a full replacment point ignition w/coil before I got the spare module. Then again, I carry a spare primary belt on long road trips too. And an extra stash of weed (never can tell when ya' may loose or forget you main stash along the way!!). I've had to replace a couple of belts alongside the road over the years, but my new-fangled ignition has been trouble free for too many miles to remember now.

thanks for the tips and advice.

The Crane and the coil both arrived today. Total invested $250 for (little)used bits in excellent condition. As against $650 brand new here.

And a guy this side of the pond has sent me a spare Hi4 which he doesn't need.

This will be my third Hi4. The first one last ten years and nearly 60,000 miles. NEver even loosened the nosecone screws for a look-see in that time. Never had to. And it took 20min to swap out for another.

I have spent 20min a day quite often dicking about with points, it seems like.

I won't miss points.

With the electronic you will be one happy camper. And now you can twist up a couple of fattys and stash them in the cone too for spares in case you need a pick me up along the road. Spidey.

I have to say........that Crane went in this morning...after mucho dicking about with having to grind and space out the (FXWG) PO's custom coil mount, and having to extend the (Hi-4 off eBay) wiring which its PO cut off way too short .... but it now idles nice and is purring like the pussy you always wanted.
